Data Warehousing and Business Intelligence

A data warehouse is a system that pulls together highly structured data from many sources within an organization for complex reporting and analysis. Data Warehouses provide a correlation between different business sectors, and aid in critical business decisions.

Data warehouses reside on dedicated servers which run RDBMS database solutions and use Extract, Transform, and Load (ETL) technologies to pull data in from the source systems. Typical data warehouses hold multiple subject areas which contribute to the large volume of data. These systems utilize the "divide and conquer" analogy where data is physically split on multiple nodes sharing server resources. The placement of data is key in the performance and optimization of a warehouse system and placement of data is directly related to how the data is being accessed.
